Measure What Matters

Measure What Matters

This week in my social media class we have started to read the book “Measure What Matters” by Katie Delahaye Paine. It is a book all about online tools for understanding customers, social media, engagement and key relationships. After reading the first few chapters I can’t wait to learn more about what measuring communication efforts can look like. She talks about the idea of what measurement is and what it is not. There are a lot of misconceptions that measurement is all about counting likes and shares. However, this book will dive into what good measurement looks like and how you measure things like relationships with consumers, ROI and effectiveness. The author starts out by explaining the advantages of to setting up a measurement program. Here they are:

1. Data-driven Decision Making Saves Time and Money
2. It Helps Allocate Budget and Staff
3. Gain A Better Understanding of the Competition
4. Strategic Planning
5. Measurement Gets Everyone to Agree on a Desired Outcome
6. Measurement Reveals Strengths and Weaknesses
7. Measurement Gives You Reasons to Say “No”

Throughout this book we will continue to learn more and more about the advantages of smart measurement. Stay tuned to my blog for the next few weeks about all the great things I learn from this book!
