Who Should I Be?
Who Should I Be?
When I was in high school, I had a very difficult time knowing what I wanted to do when I was older. I struggled watching the kids who knew their entire life plan, or thought they did, from the time they started school. They knew they were on the fast track to be a doctor or nurse or even firefighter. Then, there was little ole’ me who had no clue what I liked enough to do as a career.
I think this happens to a lot of students and they find themselves lost as they transfer from high school to college and forced to choose a major that will lead to their lifelong career. How am I, a 18 year old who has been told which classes to take and things to do for 18 years, supposed to choose what I want to do for the majority of my life? Well for me, it took a while to figure that out and some days it feels like I still am. Where should I be, what should my major be, should I be doing something else, is this right for me?
I believe for some people, being undecided could be the best option. Take some classes, try new things and hear from people who are already doing it. You might learn more about the vast options you do have while taking some of the general education classes you will have to take anyways. Undecided seems scary and not right for a lot of people, but I think the pressure should be taken away and encouraged for some people, even if it is for s semester. I think this could have been very beneficial for me to go somewhere that I can try out new things and multiple things, in order to find out where I fit best.
Have any of you changed your major, what do you guys think about this idea?
I wish I went undecided to begin with. Catching up from being in engineering is annoying.
ReplyDeleteI was one of the lucky ones back in high school who knew what they wanted to do as a career. It can be really tough to come into college not knowing what you want out of it though. A lot of my friends didn't know what they wanted to do, so they spent their first semester/year trying out a few majors they were interested in. It can definitely be good for some students to come in undecided and figure it out as they go along.
ReplyDeleteI knew which department I wanted to go into when I got here, but even now I am still constantly changing my mind on which degree I want to get from the art department.
