You Too?

You Too?

This week, there has been a trend on social media that has really been making an impact on a lot of people. People have been posting the simple phrase, “me too” on their social media accounts. The idea was noted that “If all the women who have been sexually assaulted wrote ‘me too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem. At first, I wasn’t sure what was going on. But after realizing what it was, and seeing the amount of people posting on social media from every different part of my life, it really started to have an impact on me. It did exactly what they wanted it to do, give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem. It is a topic most people don’t just openly comment about and so you never really get an idea of how many people are affected by something.

Along with this, Blake Lively was on Good Morning America and talked about the topic of sexual assault and harassment. She comments on the allegations of Harvey Weinstein which you can read more about in the link I attached. Blake Lively says in her interview, “this isn’t happening to women suddenly. This has been happening since the beginning of time but now people are finally talking about it. I think that that’s what’s important.” I watched most of the interview here and really like what she had to say. She speaks up about the longevity of this issue and how this incident is not the beginning of what has been going on for such a long time. She talks about how important it is to have these conversations about things that are happening, but also to have action conversations about what they’re going to do about it.

I think this idea that she brings up about acting on anything is important. Creating a culture that allows people to speak up and doing something about this is serious and important. I think the Harvey Weinstein case and the social media trend has really opened a lot of people’s eyes as an individual and a business.

What are you doing or seeing occur about this movement in your daily life?

  1. I saw many people posting this on social media and it really struck me. Family members, high school friends, and also college friends were posting #metoo. I think it was a fantastic hashtag to hit home to people how real sexual assault really is.
